Before every great revival, someone prayed.
In 1727, a village of refugees in Saxony could not stop fighting. Within months they were on their knees, and they started a prayer watch that ran for a hundred years. In 1857, six men joined a lonely businessman for a noon prayer meeting in New York. Within six months, ten thousand were praying in that city every day. In 1949, two elderly sisters on the Isle of Lewis prayed through the night, and a whole island turned to God.
They Prayed and God Moved tells seventeen of these stories, in the order they happened:
The Moravians and the hundred-year prayer watch
John Wesley’s warmed heart and the weekly class meeting
Jeremiah Lanphier and the Fulton Street prayer meeting
Evan Roberts and the Welsh Revival
Pandita Ramabai and the girls of Mukti
William Seymour and Azusa Street
The Pyongyang Revival of 1907
The East African Revival and the people who walked in the light
The Hebrides Revival
Jim and Carol Cymbala and the Brooklyn Tabernacle
You will also meet Edwards and Whitefield, Maria Woodworth-Etter, Smith Wigglesworth, John G. Lake, Aimee Semple McPherson, Oswald J. Smith, and Kathryn Kuhlman.
Glenn Bleakney tells what happened, using diaries, journals, and eyewitness accounts. He does not hide the failures. Each chapter ends with a short prayer, and the book includes a timeline and a guide for small groups.
If you are hungry for God to move in your church, your city, or your own heart, start here. These people prayed. Read what God did.
